The establishment of the Sultan Mizan Antarctic Research Foundation (SMARF) or the Yayasan Penyelidikan Antartika Sultan Mizan (YPASM) was approved by the Cabinet on 6 June 2012. Subsequently, on 18 July 2012, YPASM was registered as a Company Limited by Guarantee and not having share capital, under the Companies Act 1965.

Kuala Terengganu,19 July 2012 – Malaysia’s involvement in Polar research particularly in the Antarctic will be boosted with the setting up of the Sultan Mizan Antarctic Research Foundation.The Foundation was launched by His Royal Highness the Sultan of Terengganu, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) here today. His Majesty, in his royal address, also graciously accepted to become the foundation’s patron.Also present at the launching were Sultanah Nur Zahirah, YB Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Maximus Johnity Ongkili, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI); YAB Dato’ Seri Hj. Ahmad bin Said, Menteri Besar of Terengganu; State Assembly Speaker YB Dato’ Tengku Putera Bin Tengku Awang; YB Datuk Hj Fadillah Hj Yusof, Deputy Minister of MOSTI; Datuk Haji Mazlan Ngah, Terengganu State Secretary; diplomats; senior MOSTI and state government officials; and members of UMT academia.
